陈劭彦入选第六届英国Red Pages百大新秀排行榜

  在英国颇具影响力的Red Pages名人资讯网,日前揭晓2012年度的Hot 100 list百大新秀名单,来自台湾宜兰的设计新锐陈劭彦雀屏中选,这也是Red Pages举办 Hot 100以来,首次有华裔服装设计师入选。自2007年起,Red Pages每年12月都会预测下一年度100位各领域的新星,今年是第六届,并首次开始有UK和US两组名单。

女人养血 做血气十足的美人

    睡养:

Red Yeast Rice Supplements Vary in Potency

Oct. 25, 2010 -- The amount of active ingredients in red yeast rice supplements may vary widely, and some of the popular cholesterol-lowering products may also contain a toxic agent.

In a new study, researchers analyzed 12 different red yeast rice supplements, which are used by millions as an alternative therapy for high cholesterol.

They found the total level of monacolins, the active ingredients, varied from 0.31 milligrams to 11.15 milligrams per capsule. Four of the formulations also contained citrinin, a toxin from fungus that is harmful to the kidneys.

“Red yeast rice has been used for centuries for its medicinal properties and is an increasingly popular alternative lipid-lowering therapy that may benefit patients with a history of coronary disease who cannot take statins, subjects who refuse statins or who prefer a ‘natural’ approach to pharmacotherapy," write researcher Ram Y. Gordon, MD, of the University of Pennsylvania Health System, and colleagues in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

"However, our study found dramatic variability of monacolin levels in commercial products and the presence of citrinin in one-third of formulations," they write. "Further oversight and standardization of the production and labeling of red yeast rice products may address some of the concerns raised in this study."

Until these issues are addressed, researchers say caution is needed in using red yeast rice supplements to treat high cholesterol or prevent heart disease.?

Red Yeast Rice: Buyer Beware

Chinese red yeast rice, also known as hong qu, is created by culturing a yeast (Monascus purpureus) on rice. The process produces several compounds called monacolins, such as monacolin K, which is marketed in its purified form as the drug lovastatin.

Researchers say several studies have shown certain formulations of red yeast rice can reduce LDL “bad cholesterol,” largely related to the effects of the monacolins in the supplement.

Americans spent an estimated $20 million on red rice yeast supplements in 2008. But to avoid being regulated as an unapproved drug by the FDA, researchers say manufacturers do not standardize or disclose the levels of monacolin K or other monacolins in their supplements.

In the study, researchers found not only did total monacolin levels vary widely in the 12 products analyzed, but levels of monacolin K or lovastatin ranged from 0.10 milligrams to 10.09 milligrams per capsule.

In addition, four of the products contained elevated levels of the toxin citrinin.

Eat Less Red Meat, Cut Heart Attack Risk

Cutting back on red and processed meats may significantly reduce heart disease risk in women, a new study says.

Scientists examined data on 84,136 women between the ages of 30 and 55 over a 26-year period ending in 2006. The women were participants in a research project known as the Nurses’ Health Study. Researchers examined medical histories and lifestyle choices of the women, including dietary habits obtained via detailed questionnaires.?

This study differs from previous analyses in that the follow-up period was long, repeated dietary questionnaires were administered over the course of the study, and the impact of substituting protein alternatives in place of red meat was evaluated.

During the study period, 2,210 non-fatal heart attacks and 952 deaths from coronary disease occurred.

The study found that women who had two servings per day of red meat had a 30% greater risk of developing heart disease compared to women who had half a serving daily.

“Our study shows that making substitutes for red meat or minimizing the amount of red meat in the diet has important health benefits,” Adam M. Bernstein, MD, ScD, a postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health, says in a news release.

Poultry, fish, and nuts may be healthy substitutes because those foods were associated with important decreases in the development of coronary heart disease.

Study Findings

Among the study findings:

  • Women who reported eating one serving of nuts per day were 30% less likely to develop coronary artery disease.
  • Women who said they ate fish on a daily basis had a 24% lower risk.
  • Women in the study who said they ate one serving of poultry per day had a 19% lower risk of heart disease.
  • Women who reported consuming low-fat dairy products daily had a 13% lower risk of developing coronary heart disease.

“There are good protein-rich sources that do not involve red meat,” Bernstein says. “You don’t need to have hot dogs, hamburgers, bologna, or pastrami, which are all fresh or processed meats.”

Bernstein notes that though the study included only women, its findings most likely apply to men, too.

“Those who are concerned and want to reduce their risk of heart disease should consider replacing red meat with other protein-rich foods, including fish, poultry, low-fat dairy products, and nuts,” Bernstein says in the news release.

The study is published in the August 2010 issue of Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association.

Study Links Processed Red Meat to Bladder Cancer

Aug. 2, 2010 -- Eating large amounts of processed red meats may raise the risk for developing bladder cancer, according to a new study.

Processed meats often contain the preservatives nitrate and nitrite. They are typically found in hot dogs, pepperoni, and deli cold cuts.

Researchers suspect that when processed meats are eaten regularly over time and in large quantities, these preservatives may interfere with the bladder’s lining when they are passed through the urine.

How the meat is prepared -- grilled, fried, microwaved, or broiled -- may also play a role in cancer risk.

Nitrite and Bladder Cancer

A team of researchers led by Amanda J. Cross, PhD, of the National Cancer Institute in Rockville, Md., followed 300,933 men and women aged 50 to 71 for more than seven years to evaluate the relationship between eating processed meat and the risk of developing bladder cancer. During the study, there were 854 cases (720 men and 134 women) of bladder cancer. The results are published in the online edition of the journal Cancer.

Participants filled out dietary questionnaires and provided information about their lifestyles, such as race/ethnicity, smoking, and education. Their total dietary nitrate and nitrite intakes were measured.?The researchers also determined nitrite and nitrate content for 10 processed meats representing 90% of processed meats eaten in the U.S.

Researchers found a clear association between red meat cold cuts and bladder cancer risk. When they looked closer, they found a link between total dietary nitrite intake and bladder cancer risk but no clear link between total dietary nitrate intake and bladder cancer.

Bladder cancer was not associated with eating bacon, beef, hamburger, sausage, or steak, or white meat, such as chicken and turkey.

Those who ate the most red processed meats were more likely to be younger, less educated, less physically active, and eat fewer fruits, vegetables, and vitamins C and E. They were also more likely to be non-Hispanic whites, current smokers, and have a higher body mass index -- a measurement of height and weight.

"Our findings highlight the importance of studying meat-related compounds to better understand the association between meat and cancer risk," Cross says.

How Red Wine Helps the Heart

June 21, 2010 -- How does drinking red wine manage to keep the cardiologist at bay? Two studies suggest different approaches as to how merlots and cabernet sauvignons and other types of red wine offer heart-healthy benefits.

In the first of two studies published in the July issue of American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, scientists at the University of Ulm, Germany, investigated the biological behaviors of resveratrol in human fat cell biology. Resveratrol is found in the skins of red grapes and has been shown to be a potent biological agent that may offer protection against cardiovascular disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease.

Researchers hypothesized that resveratrol might decrease obesity by preventing immature fat cells from fully maturing, and also help activate sirtuin 1 (Sirt 1), a protein that protects the heart from inflammation.

Laboratory tests conducted in vitro on human cells, in which cells were managed in a control environment, such as a petri dish, showed that resveratrol influenced fat cells' form and function. Resveratrol blocked immature fat cells from developing and differentiating, which, in turn, affected the fat cells' abilities to function. Several studies have used animals to examine resveratrol's effects, but this is one of the first to use human fat cells.

They also found that resveratrol stimulated glucose uptake into human fat cells and blocked molecules from converting into fat. Moreover, resveratrol influenced Sirt1 in a beneficial way and it also affected the secretion of adipokines, fat cells that engage in cell-to-cell communication. The findings indicate that resveratrol might interfere with obesity and other metabolic effects that could increase the risk for cardiovascular disease.

Researchers suggest resveratrol could offer some therapeutic opportunities in the treatment of obesity, which is quite prevalent in the industrialized world. Reducing obesity, a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, may also help improve heart health. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are 1.6 billion people age 15 and older who are overweight -- meaning they have a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or higher -- and at least 400 million people who are obese, meaning their BMI is 30 or higher. The WHO projects that in five years there will be 2.3 billion overweight adults and more than 700 million obese adults.

"Our findings open up the new perspective that resveratrol-induced intracellular pathways could be a target for prevention or treatment of obesity-associated endocrine and metabolic adverse effects," the authors write. "Resveratrol may act on different levels of cell signaling."

Red Wine and Blood Vessel Cells

In the second study, researchers from the Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa found that red wine enhanced the health of the cells in blood vessels. The research team studied 15 healthy adults with a mean age of 29 years who agreed to consume 250 mL (8.5 ounces or two servings) of red wine everyday for three consecutive weeks. The participants provided blood samples at the beginning and end of the three-week study period so that researchers could evaluate blood vessel function.

Salmonella Found in Crushed Red Pepper

Feb. 26, 2010 -- Two wholesale lots of crushed red pepper linked to the ongoing national salmonella outbreak have been recalled, and the FDA is looking at whether to recall retail products.

The FDA has confirmed salmonella contamination of red pepper samples collected at Daniele International Inc. in Rhode Island. Sausages made by Daniele have previously been linked to the salmonella outbreak.

It's not yet clear whether the salmonella in the red pepper is the same strain as the Montevideo strain that has sickened at least 238 people in 44 states and the District of Columbia. While investigating this outbreak, the CDC found that a different type of salmonella, the Seftenberg strain, is also causing food-borne illness in the U.S.

The unopened containers of crushed red pepper found to be contaminated with salmonella were made by Wholesome Spice of Brooklyn, N.Y. As a result, the company has recalled all lots of 25-pound boxes of crushed red pepper it sold between April 6, 2009, and Jan. 20, 2010.

These large boxes of pepper were distributed to wholesale suppliers throughout the Northeast. They were not sold at the retail level. FDA spokesman Sebastian Cianci tells WebMD the agency is working with Wholesome Spice to identify the customers who got the recalled product and to determine whether a recall of retail products will be necessary.

No deaths have been reported in the Salmonella Montevideo outbreak, although about a fourth of the victims have been hospitalized.

The FDA's investigation initially discovered the outbreak strain of salmonella in an open container of black pepper from the Daniele sausage plant. But tests of closed black-pepper containers were negative, suggesting that this form of pepper became contaminated at the plant after it was opened.

In healthy people, salmonella usually causes fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and/or abdominal pain or cramps. Less commonly, salmonella gets into the bloodstream and causes life-threatening illnesses. Salmonella can be fatal in young children, frail elderly people, and people with weakened immune systems.

Red Wine Chemical May One Day Treat Diabetes

Oct. 9, 2009 -- The much touted compound resveratrol shows some promise as a future treatment for type 2 diabetes, but drinking wine or taking resveratrol supplements isn’t likely to do diabetic people much good, researchers say.

Resveratrol, found in red wine, was found to lower blood sugar levels and improve insulin levels when injected directly into the brains of mice fed very high-calorie diets in a study conducted by researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW).

The finding suggests that the brain plays a key role in resveratrol’s beneficial effect on diabetes and that the benefits may occur independently of diet and body weight.

If this is true, new type 2 diabetes treatments targeting the brain may be possible, lead researcher Roberto Coppari, PhD, tells WebMD.

But drinking red wine is not likely to improve blood sugar and insulin levels because resveratrol does not cross the blood-brain barrier very efficiently.

“We don’t want to send the message that you can treat diabetes by drinking red wine,” Coppari tells WebMD. “Two or three glasses a day wouldn’t be nearly enough for the brain to accumulate the amount of resveratrol delivered in our study. It would take many, many bottles, and clearly that wouldn’t be good for you.”

Resveratrol: Fountain of Youth?

Resveratrol first made headlines several years ago when researchers identified it as the substance likely responsible for the health benefits to the heart attributed to red wine.

The buzz became almost deafening early this year, when the news program 60 Minutes aired a story suggesting that resveratrol-based drugs may one day succeed in slowing aging in humans.

Found mostly in the skin of red grapes and other dark fruits, resveratrol has been shown to protect against diabetes in studies involving mice, although very high doses of the molecule have been needed.

In the newly published study, Coppari and colleagues examined whether injecting resveratrol directly into the brains of diabetic mice would activate a group of proteins known as sirtuins, which have been shown to have anti-diabetes properties in earlier animal studies.

The UTSW researchers injected one group of diabetic mice with resveratrol, while a second group was given saline-containing placebo injections.

All the mice were fed a very high-fat diet throughout the study.

Despite this, insulin levels in the resveratrol-treated mice dropped significantly and were halfway to normal by the end of the five-week study. Insulin levels among the placebo-treated mice continued to rise.

Resveratrol Activates SIRT1

The resveratrol injections were found to activate SIRT1 proteins in the brain and they reduced brain inflammation related to the mice’s high-calorie diets.

The study was published this week online and it will appear in the December issue of the journal Endocrinology.

“The brain appears to be a major player in diabetes,” Coppari says. “The treatments we have for diabetes target other organs like the liver. The brain hasn’t really been on the map.”

If the findings are confirmed, Coppari believes the brain could become a target for not only diabetes treatments, but treatments for cardiovascular disease and obesity as well.

The study is not the first to show that resveratrol can prevent the deleterious consequences of a eating a high-fat diet.

In November of 2006, researchers from Harvard Medical School and the National Institute on Aging reported that obese mice fed a diet containing 60% of calories from fat lived significantly longer if they were treated with resveratrol.

The resveratrol-treated mice lived as long as lean mice, with a much better quality of life, as measured by motor skills tests.

“After six months, resveratrol essentially prevented most of the negative effects of the high calorie diet in mice,” study co-author Rafael de Cabo, PhD, of the National Institutes of Aging says in a news release.
