Checklist
- Seek out a gentle line of linens and wash them with non-toxic laundry products.
- Grow your garden using only natural fertilizers.
- Recycle old electronics before buying energy efficient new ones.
- Keep your hair and nail color natural.
- Choose fragrance-free products.
- Fill reusable containers with eco-friendlyshampoos and lotions.
- Give old but still-functioning electronics a second life before pulling the plug. Check to see if the manufacturer of your old electronics offers a recycling program. Reduce e-waste by refurbishing your current electronics, passing them along to friends or donating them to a good cause.
- Look for electronics that carry the Energy Star label.
- Turn off computers and lights when not in use and open the curtains to maximize natural light.
- Retrofit your home office with energy-efficient compact fluorescent lights (CFL), available at hardware stores.
- Put used paper in a recycling container for your baby’s first scribbles.
- Avoid renovations that require scraping, sanding, or refinishing older walls or furniture.
- If you’re remodeling, choose the least toxic materials you can find, such as low- or no-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paint.
